Nithyananda - a multimillionaire 'Swami'

Nithyananda has stashed away crores in personal accounts; claims he is NOT a man!

Nithyananda's account has Rs. 32 crores

Chandan Nandy, Bangalore, April 28, DHNS:

The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sleuths have stumbled upon a personal bank account of self-styled godman Nithyananda with a leading private sector bank in Bangalore in which he has a whopping total deposit of around Rs 32 crore.

The bank has frozen the account at the behest of the CID which is looking into all the financial transactions –– accounted as well as unaccounted –– of the godman who is now under police custody for interrogation.

At least three other bank accounts where two trusts run by Nithyananda maintain a deposit of around Rs 20-25 crore have already been frozen. The CID is analysing these accounts and the sources of the funds. Efforts are also on to trace whether money from these accounts has been transferred to undisclosed banks abroad.

Nithyananda’s unaccounted money in his personal account is different from the deposits that are in the name of two trusts, Dhyana Peeta Charitable Trust (DPCT), which was registered in 2003, and Nithyananda Dhyanapeeetam Trust (NDT), registered in 2005.

Police sources believe that money was diverted from donations to Nithyananda’s personal account where profits of a company by the name of Nithyananda Imports and Exports, run by his brother Nithyeshwara, alias Gopinath, were also deposited.

Deccan Herald is in possession of some documents which show exports of a large number of idols of Hindu gods and goddesses which were sold at prices 5 to 15 times higher than their cost price. Some of the wire transfers indicate that the profits were moved from Wells Fargo Bank in California to some Indian banks which are now in the process of being identified.

The only trustees of NDT and DPCT are Nithyananda, his secretary T Dhanasekaran, alias Sadhananda, and his wife D Jamunarani, alias Ma Sadhananda.

The last two have disappeared from Nithyananda’s Bidadi ashram since Saturday.
It is learnt from unimpeachable sources that while DPCT filed a tax return of close to Rs 5 crore in the 2009-10 fiscal, NDT’s return reflect a staggering Rs 8.5 crore.

This unusually high return declared by NDT has prompted the Directorate of Income Tax to select it for special scrutiny.

Income Tax officials will officially write to the CID and seek access to documents related to the financial dealings of Nithyananda’s many organisations operating from the United States, Europe, South America and India.

They reckon that there is strong possibility of the I-T department serving show-cause notice to the godman on why the exemption benefits enjoyed by his trusts under 80G and 12A of the I-T Act should not be cancelled. The investigation wing of the I-T department will also likely get into the act to pursue its own enquiries on possible tax evasion by the godman and his organisations in India.

The sources here as well as abroad have disclosed that Nithyananda and some of his closest associates operated at least three hedge funds which operated from the United States, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The CID is in the process of getting hold of the details of the investment funds as well as obtaining information that in 2008 Nithyananda had plans to outright buy a private island either off the coast of Canada or Indonesia.

His global secretary Sachitananda was tasked with the job of contacting a Germany-based Turkish broker in islands. The money set aside for the island purchase was US$ 5 million.

Nithyananda, the sadhu who reads Cosmopolitan

IBN Live, Tuesday , April 27, 2010

Nithyananda isn't your garden variety swami. He flips through glam magazines, chit-chats with the powerful, and beds the pretty and gullible.

"God's will is always good, acceptable, and perfect. Let's trust God to show us the best and most bountiful way to experience His blessed gift of sex." --Kay Arthur, author of 'Sex According to God: How to Walk with Purity in a World of Temptation'.

They say luck favours the brave. Sometimes it also favours the horny!

Sex swami Nithyananda must be thanking the IPL for saving him from the media gaze. His Indian Sex League (ISL) is juicer than the IPL, but the TV channels were obsessed with the latter.

All kinds of people come to Bangalore. It has all kinds, from saints to sinners. And sinners in the garb of saints.

When Nithyananda landed in Bangalore eight years ago, he was totally unknown. The booming city allowed him to prosper. In three to four years, Nithyananda had become one of this city's many godmen.

Nobody outside his circles really cared about him. But to his devotees, as Karl Marx famously said, religion was opium. Before those hidden cameras caught him in action, he must have had a good time with several of his devotees.

His life was truly "daily bliss" (nitya-ananda) till the channels started airing his exploits eight weeks ago.

I first saw this swami 30,000 feet above ground level two years ago. I was flying from Delhi to Bangalore, and he was in the business class. What caught my eye was the magazine he was reading, and not his saffron robes.

He was flipping through the glam magazine Cosmopolitan!

What is wrong, you ask. Nothing, I say.

The ancient Rigveda says, "Let knowledge come to us from all corners of the world". So what does it matter if he were reading the Cosmopolitan or the Katopanishad!

According to Hinduism, anything can lead to redemption. Some find truth by sleeping, and some by walking naked. Some find it between the sheets!

Like the now disgraced Lalit Modi's IPL, Nithyananda's ISL was an instant hit. Politicians, film stars, businessmen and well-heeled NRIs were thronging his ashram.

He started to believe he was god. Lalit Modi had the same delusion. He really believed he was the god of Indian cricket.

Perhaps for the first time in the world a godman has slept with his women devotees after making them sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

Who should be blamed here? This alleged sex maniac in the garb of a holy man or his blind followers? I say both.

Nithyananda was very close to the RSS and other right wing Hindu outfits. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi had received a princely Rs 2.5 lakh from him in public. Nithyananda was also hobnobbing with political leaders like S M Krishna, B S Yeddyurappa, Dharam Singh, Rameshwar Thakur and even a gentleman like T N Chaturvedi, the former Governor of Karnataka.

Why is nobody asking them tough questions? What were they doing with him? Did they know what was happenning in his bedroom? We must demand explanations.

I once again quote from the Bible because this self appointed protector of Hinduism had thousands of Western devotees who follow Jesus Christ.

As Kay Arthur says, let's go back to the very beginning, to Genesis, the first book in the Bible, to see what God says about sex:

GENESIS 1:25-28

- God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

- God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

Nithyananda now has all the time in the world to read everything about our basic instincts. Instead of just rotting in jail, he can concentrate on studying sex and religion. He may find many passages to justify what he did. I will religiously send him a reading list. As our Vedas say, "This body is for the service of mankind."

Nithyananda allegedly smuggled gold from US

Tuesday April 27, 2010, Bangalore
CID sleuths have revealed that Swami Nithyananda would routinely smuggle 24 carat gold weighing several kilograms from the US.

According to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Swami Nithyananda visited the US quite often. During his visits, he used to carry objects that looked like gold.

"He usually got things made in form of rosaries and sandals that he used to wear while returning to India," reads a DRI letter that was sent to the Bangalore airport authorities, a copy of which is in possession of MiD DAY.

The letter also mentions that Swami Nithyananda misused his image of a spiritual guru to smuggle gold.

According to the officials, the swami believed that he'd be never caught, as the custom officials never bothered to check him when he used to go on spiritual trips.

DRI officials had also issued a look out circular to all the airports soon after sex swami went into hiding.

The DRI sleuths suspect that Nityananda could have used the same technique for smuggling precious stones as well.

Besides, the officials suspect that Ma Nithyananda Gopika, sex swami's personal assistant, helped him in the smuggling racket.

Nithyananda violated rules of tantric sex

2010-04-26 21:00:00
Sri sri ravishankar
New York: Disgraced self-styled godman Swami Nityananda violated the rules of tantra by "using so many people for one's pleasure", Art of Living Foundation head Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said Monday.

A Foundation statement quoted him as saying in Cincinnati in the US that Swami Nityananda, now in custody, "has violated UNAIDS guidelines as well as the rules of tantra.”

"Only a house holder is entitled for tantric sex. Claiming to be a monk and using so many people for one's pleasure is unpardonable," Ravi Shankar said.

"He should have had one partner and announced himself as a tantric guru. It has caused damage to the faith of people in the institution and traumatised many."

Several criminal cases relating to obscenity, criminal intimidation, rape and hurting religious sentiments have been slapped against the 32-year-old Swami Nityananda.

Now in police custody in Karnataka, he was on the run since March 3 after television channels showed footage of him in bed with two women.

Nithyananda's police custody extended, fakes heart attack!

Nithyananda fakes heart attack to escape interrogation
Bangalore: April 26, DH News Service

In what appears to be a means to avoid interrogation, arrested self-styled godman Nithyananda on Monday was admitted to hospital near here moments after he was remanded to police custody for two additional days.

Before the law: Nithyananda being brought to a court in
Ramanagara. dh photoAccording to Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology director C N Manjunath, following tests on Nithyananda, it was found that all the parameters were normal. Apart from blood, tests, Nithyananda underwent ECG and ecocardiogram checks. “On Tuesday morning, we will make him undergo treadmill test after which we will take a decision on whether to discharge him or not. He is admitted to the ICU at present,” Manjunath told Deccan Herald.

Police sources said that Nithyananda complained of a shooting pain in his chest while on his way to Bangalore from the Ramanagara Judicial Magistrate’s court which remanded him to police custody for two more days.

He was produced in the court on Monday afternoon after being in police custody for four days following his arrest in Himachal Pradesh on April 21 and subsequent arrival in Bangalore.

Police sources suspect Nithyananda is “feigning” chest pain “for he thinks this was one way to squirm out of the interrogation” which is taking place at the CID headquarters here. For the first two days, he told his interrogators that he did not remember anything relating to the sex video.

Later, he is believed to said he “thought he recognised Ranjitha, but not the man (he himself)” featured in the video secretly filmed by a former devotee Lenin Karuppan, alias Dharmananda.

On Saturday, Nithyananda is believed to have wept, though he tried to evade questions by giving his customary smile. He, however, stopped smiling when he was asked to do so by his interrogators. “He thought he could use the smile to good effect, but that didn’t work those interrogating him,” police sources said.

Several  former devotees told Deccan Herald that Nithyananda’s chest pain was “as fake”. One senior devotee said that during most spiritualism classes he would boast of his ability to work ceaselessly for five days at a stretch.

He is also believed to have told the police that he was on medicine for treatment of hypertension, which has not been brought out by the tests carried out at the hospital on Monday.

Nithyananda's police custody extended by 2 days
Bangalore, Apr 26 (PTI):

A court today extended by two days the police custody of self-styled godman Nityananda Swami, arrested on criminal charges including rape.

Ramanagaram Sessions Court Judge Hungund extended the custody of Nityananda on a plea by the Crime Investigation Department (CID), probing the charges, seeking custody for four more days.

Nityananda, embroiled in a sex scandal, was produced before the Judge amid tight security at the end of expiry of the four-day police custody granted on April 22, a day after he was arrested in Himachal Pradesh.

The CID in its remand application said the statement of victims, Gopika and Ranjitha, had not been recorded and that the police was also awaiting report from Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad, in connection with computer hard discs seized from Nityanand's ashram in Bidadi in Ramanagaram.
Nityananda's counsel H S Chandramouli opposed the CID's plea for extension of police custody.

His close aide Nitya Bhaktananda alias Seelam Reddy, who was also produced in court, was remanded in 14 days judicial custody.
The bail application of Nityananda is likely to be heard by the court on April 29.
Nityananda, who remained elusive for over a month after video clippings purportedly showing him in a compromising position with an actress were aired by TV channels, was nabbed along with his aide in a joint operation by Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh police teams in Solan district on April 21.

More complaints and Investigations await Nithyananda

Nithyananda may be grilled in Pondicherry

P Jonathan Ambrose, 26 Apr 2010

PUDUCHERRY: After Justin Devdoss was brought to Puducherry for interrogation in connection with the JBJ construction scam, it is now the turn of swami Nithyananda. The swami’s second trip to the old French town, after his last visit in January 2009 to offer darshan for his devotees, may not be a patch on the first one.

The police have moved the Puducherry court seeking custody of Nithyananda and he may be brought here next week.

This move came after seven advocates from Puducherry filed a complaint alleging that the Nithyananda ashram on Puducherry outskirts had swindled money from the people in the name of meditations and blessings. A case has been filed under section 402 for cheating and 295 (A), for exploiting the religious feelings of the people.

“The entire Tamil society had suffered an erosion in morality and decency. The swami had received money from the people in the name of religion,” said advocate Aladi Mahendran on Sunday.

Investigation had revealed that during the swami’s visit last year, tokens priced at Rs 1,000 each were issued for a devotee to receive his blessings.

Over 2,000 devotees had attended this worship meeting. Besides, Rs 700 was charged for the weekly meditation classes in the ashram at Eambalam, but no receipts were issued.

US agency seeks info on Nithyananda case progress
MK Madhusoodan / DNA
Monday, April 26, 2010 10:28 IST

Bangalore: Even as the criminal investigation department continued to interrogate the tainted swami, Paramahamsa Nithyananda, a US security agency made “casual” enquiries on the progress of the case.
The US agency, it was learnt, showed interest on getting information related to a complaint filed against the swami in that country. It was also interested in knowing the flow of funds from Nithyananda’s ashram, Dhyanapeetham, in Bidadi, about 35km from Bangalore, according to CID sources.

Douglas McKeller of San Jose, US, had accused Nithyananda of sexually exploiting his devotees, fraud and financial irregularities.

It was suspected that the swami had routed funds to the now-extinct militant organisation, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, of Sri Lanka. Sources indicated that they would be looking into the self-styled godman’s international connections as well as financial transactions.

The CID would be writing to the central enforcement directorate (customs) to charge cases against Nithyananda under the provisions ofForeign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and Foreign Exchange Regulatory Act (FERA). “We are not authorised to file cases under FEMA and FERA. So we have decided to write to the directorate of enforcement,” a CID officer said.

The CID had found that Nithyananda and his brother Nityeshwarananda were holding joint accounts in Canara Bank's Ramanagara branch, besides several others in Corporation Bank. The accounts revealed that the duo had received money from foreign countries.

Meanwhile, the director-general of police (CID) BV Guruprasad and DIG Charan Reddy quizzed Nithyananda on Sunday afternoon. The swami was cooperating with the investigation.

Nithyananda underwent medical examination on Sunday morning at the CID headquarters here. The interrogation started around 10 am. The arrested swami had lunch, brought from the Bidadi ashram, around 1.45 pm.

The CID would produce him before the Ramanagara chief judicial magistrate on Monday, to seek a four days’ extension of his police remand.

Nithyananda would also be taken to his Bidadi ashram to collect evidence. Sources in the CID said the swami would be travelling under tight security.

Nithyananda to be investigated for money laundering

Bangalore April 24 DH News Service

Self-styled godman Nithyananda is likely to be interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate and booked under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

CID sleuths interrogating Nithyananda at their Bangalore headquarters are almost convinced that Nithyananda is involved in a series of money deals abroad.

His foreign donations, investments and assets are sure to come under the scanner.
“We are aware that none of the cases Nithyananda is facing is going to hold water, but he is sure to be grilled and cornered under the Money Laundering Act. So, we will apprise the Government and seek ED’s  interference," said a senior officer.

Director General (CID) Guruprasad quizzed Nithyananda for more than two hours. Nithyananda was rolling the rudrakshi beads and answering the questions. For the last two days, he did not co-operate with the police.

Later, a marathon review meeting was held and the officers involved in the investigations presented their updated papers.

At the time of his arrest in Himachal Pradesh, Nithyananda was carrying $7,000 and during interrogation he failed to give a convincing answer and reveal the source.

It is clear that the godman has not taken any sanctions from the Government of India.
On Monday, Nithyananda will be produced before the court and, if need be, the cops will request for an extension of his police custody.

STAND UP FOR DHARMA

Dear Friends,

Like me, many of you have followed Nithyananda blindly, accepting whatever he had to say and giving up your life and wealth to him and his mission. Fortunately, i came across evidence to show that he was not he claimed to be. His entire self and mission were built on lies, and now lie in ruins.

Now knowing these facts, many of his senior acharyas, organizers and also ordained brahmacharis and sanyasis have moved away from him, both in India and USA, because they have lost faith in him. Nithyananda should be called Mithyananda, because whatever he said and did was based on falsehood. Because of him, many people have now lost faith in the Vediic tradition and the entire concept of Self Realization or Enlightenment. What he has done claiming to be an enlightened being has traumatized many people.

Here is a biography of his lies.

1. Nithyananda claimed in his authorized biography that he was born on 1 January 1978, in the Tamil month of Margazhi, in Chitra nakshatra, Kanya rasi, ashtami tithi in kanya lagna. We went to the panchang and nothing matched on this date. You can also google and find out.

Nithyananda's passport says he was born on 13 march 1977. None of his astrological details match this date also. So it was a fictional date and a fictional birth. The problem is that the Government of India can prosecute him for false date of birth given for passport and he can be barred forever from USA and other countries.

What about the prediction by his family astrologer that he will be a raja sanyasi? If he is still alive we can talk to him.

Nithyananda says in his biography that based on these very auspicious signs of his birth, he is an incarnation. He has claimed to be an avatar. Why would an avatar lie about his birth?

Now his ashram inmates are circulating nadi, or palm leaf, predictions, to prove his avatarhood. Trouble is that these nadis are all being manufactured by local entrepreneurs in Vaidheeswaran Koil. SUN TV which broke his mission also carried a documentary on the palm leaf predictions. Those too are mithya!

2. Nithyananda's basis for his spiritual quest was the 'enlightenment' at the age of 12 following an initiation by Annamalai Swamigal in Thiruvannmalai. If this was true, it must have left a deep impression on Annamalai Swamigal. But the detailed biography of Annamalai Swamigal by David Godman makes no mention of any child prodigy who met him. It was all in the mind of young Rajasekaran.

3. Nithyananda has spoken with tears in his eyes about his encounter with Arunagiri Yogeshwara, a fellow avatar. It is true that Ramana Maharishi had made references to Arunagiri Yogi. Perhaps Nithyananda's fertile imagination built a fairy tale around this reference along with the banyan tree, which we shall touch upon later. Nithyananda says he was given a saffron robe by this avatar and that no laboratory could analyse this fabric. The Police , we are sure, will be quickly able to do a forensic analysis and determine its miraculous origin.

4. Nithyananda has claimed that he was in parivrajaka or monastic wandering for nine years till his enlightenment. Parivrajaka means that one cannot stay for more than 3 days in any one location. When questioned, his ashram inner circle clarified that he started this at the age of 12 after his 'enlightenment' experience. Given that his age is a lie and the experience at 12 is another lie, is this also a lie?

Surely. Ramakrishna Ashram has records to show that a young Rajasekaran was with them for 4 years from 1996 till 2000. Till 1996 he was in a polytechnic studying. It must have been a very powerful parivrjaka indeed, perhaps wandering in his school, college and later in an ashram. We have a different name for such wanderers.

5. Now the bombshell. Nithyananda says he was enlightened on 1 January 2000 in the forests of Omkareshwar after 6 days of intense unclutching from Christmas day when he walked across the raging Narmada river.

If he was in Ramakrishna Ashram, did he have another body? Or was this 'enlightenment' another hoax? Or was he studying tantric sex somewhere?

None of these details are my creation. Factual records are available to support each point. But then, Nithyananda will say that his version is truth, not fact. That is why he is Mithyananda.

6. Let us now come to the foundation of his mission in 2002 or 2003. It is all about a poor banyan tree. Nithyananda says he had a vision to establish his mission and ashram under a banyan tree. His true Hanuman, read Danasekaran, then identified the tree in Bidadi. Nithyananda claimed that the Bidadi banyan tree is 650 years old. Problem is that the Police found the guy who planted this tree in Bidadi and he is only 70 years old! Perhaps the tree suffered from progeria like Amitabh Bachan did in Paa!

7. Nithyananda also said that the muneeswara buried under this tree came in the dream of the land owner and told him to gift the land to him. But a little bird told us in our waking state that Danasekaran alias Ayya paid cash to 'buy' the land but show it as gift. Convenient for both parties. Perhaps something here for tax people.

The Muneeswara became a swayambu linga, which in turn became Anadeshwara that in turn became the marble statue of Mithyananda!

8. Nithyananda claimed he was spreading the Vedic mind through his yogic body by establishing temples all over the world. Good thought and also very profitable. With his henchmen in Chennai and Thiruvannamalai, he created temple material and exported them at a huge margin through his private company nithyananda imports & exports. Who ran this company? His brother!

You may not know that running a temple is very good business but Nithyananda and his brother knew. It is also the best way to launder black money and also if needed to create cash. The Vedic mind was very sharp!

9. All what i have outlined till now is a fairy tale compared to what he did once the mission was established.

We have documents from 2005 that ashramites were made to sign for living and learning with the master. The voluntary signatories of these documents, which are semi-legal contractual agreements preventing those who signed from disclosing anything, agree to have sex with the master and others designated by him. The process will also include photography, videography etc guaranteed to provide spiritual ecstasy through sexual tantric practices. We are informed that in addition to the master, some key disciples may also enjoyed his privileges.

Contents of these documents have been published in English and vernacular newspapers and blogs. The documents are also with the Police.

Nithyananda's modus operandi was simple. Once he identified an attractive woman, or less often a male, one of his key disciples would send the girl to his inner chamber, ostensibly to massage his legs. The contact became closer after that. He would tell them that he was an avatar, a Shiva , a Krishna, and through union with him they would experience enlightenment. In technical terms, this was rape, since the woman was in no position to resist the sexual advances of the man who she had till then considered God. It was a hypnotic union. Once the job was done, the key disciples would ensure that the victim signed the non disclosure documents, in case that had not happened yet.

a very simple, but effective strategy, that some times was repeated several times a day. Several dozen women were victims and are still traumatized.

Was Nithyananda running an ashram or a perverted school for prostitution? What were the ashramites thinking when they signed these documents? Were they even aware of what they were signing? What would you do if your daughter, sister, wife, mother or friend was in the Nithyananda ashram?

Nithyananda also ran a gurukulam school for young children inside the ashram. Does your mind boggle?

10. People ask me why i have not gone public with information about other women or even men who had relations with Nithyananda the same way as SUN TV publicly displayed the Ranjitha videos. (Incidentally Nithyananda had told many senior followers who he called up from hiding to confirm that the SUN TV videos were true, while his ashram henchmen were still in denial mode.)

i am silent because i have related to these women and men as sisters, brothers and friends, who i respected and loved. I do not see any reason why they should suffer more than what they have suffered in the hands of Nithyananda. It is up to them as individuals to go to the Police if they wish to.

Would you have done differently if you were related to these victims, even if your blood boiled?

11. Nithyananda went into hiding once the videos were aired. Why, if he was innocent? He ran away like a common criminal, fearing for his life. When some senior religious leaders advised him to go on a true parivrajaka, he said, ' do you want me to die? do you think i will survive?'

When arrested he had enough money that would have kept an ordinary man in comfort for 5 years.

Do you still believe him? Do you still believe that all the kalpatarus at 1000 rupees and padapujas at 25000 rupees and house visits at one lac rupees had any truth or sanctity behind them. With great difficulty his mission's spin doctors found twenty people to give testimonials about these hyped up events. For every person who believed to have benefited, a hundred people were cheated.

If you were one of them who gave away money and feel cheated please stand up and complain to the Police. Cheating and defrauding people of money, even if it is only Rs 1000, based on false promises to provide wealth, health, relationship, success or peace is a crime, punishable under Section 420 as a cognizable non bailable offense.

Even if 10 people stand up and complain about how they were defrauded by Nithyananda, he can be put away. He will not have the chance to ruin the life of another wife, daughter, sister, mother or friend.

If after all this, you still believe that he is an enlightened being and god, it is your decision. But to me and many others who have studied the evidence against him, he is just a fraud and sex addict. He needs treatment in a correctional mental asylum.

He is an ordinary man, who acquired some powers that he misused. Now he has been arrested and the law will follow its course. If he had been anything more special, nothing like this would have happened. Many people may have been afraid of him so far. There is nothing to be afraid of a common criminal.

Please stand up and do what you believe as dharma! That will help this Vedic religion of Hinduism.

Please circulate this as widely as you can. The more number of people read this, the more intelligently they can make their choices. Please help.

SATYAMEVA JAYATE (LET TRUTH ALONE TRIUMPH)

With deep respect for your intelligence and concern for your welfare

Nithyananda may lose his ashram land

Chandan Nandy, Bangalore, April 23, DH News Service:

The Ramanagara district administration has initiated proceedings to identify the land-related violations that arrested self-proclaimed godman Nithyananda committed after procuring the 22-acre property over which he built the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam ashram in Bidadi near here.

The action began a couple of weeks ago after a report by the Bidadi tahsildar addressed to Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner G L Chandrashekharaiah and the Assistant Commissioner identified two clear violations of specific provisions of the Karnataka Land Reforms Act, 1961 and the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964.

According to the report, Nithyananda, who is the sole owner of the 22-acre land in Bidadi, violated Sections 79A and B of the Karnataka Land Reforms Act, 1961 which states that "no person other than a person cultivating land personally shall be entitled to hold land."
The land over which his ashram has been built is solely owned by Nithyananda who is not an agriculturist. Further, he has also violated Section 95 of the 1964 Act. Section 95 states that a person who is not a farmer cannot hold agricultural land in his/her name.

Tahsildar’s report

The Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner will soon begin action by way of hearings in which Nithyananda's lawyers will have to prove that there was no violation of the laws. Failure to do so could invite punishment in the form forfeiture of the land, summary removal, eviction and payment of fine.

The tahsildar's report states that Nithyananda has also violated Section 95 because he constructed buildings for purposes other than agriculture.

The buildings are in the form of apartment blocks which were advertised to be sold for Rs 6-8 lakhs to devotees.

The godman's plan included building a health club, an ayurvedic spa, a department store and pharmacy, a recreation centre, a library, an open-air amphitheatre, laundro-mats, landscape garden, a swimming pool and a creek and lake 'flowing through the contours of the ashram'.

He had not taken permission from the Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner to build these facilities.

What makes the violations serious is that the land over which the ashram is built is solely in the name of Nithyananda and not registered under Dhyana Peeta Charitable Trust. The land donors have slapped a legal notice on Nithyananda, demanding its return.

‘Move vacation Bench’

The High Court, hearing the Nithyananda episode, on Friday permitted the petitioner to move the vacation bench in case of urgency.

Hearing the petition filed by Nithyananda, Justice Arali Nagraj adjourned the matter to May 28, 2010.

However, the court granted the liberty to the petitioner to approach the vacation bench in case he feels the urgency.

Chandan Nandy and Sangeeta Samuel, Bangalore, April 22, DH News Service:
The arrival section at Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) Thursday evening was a sea of Khaki - policemen armed with carbines and batons -- guarding Gate 7 from which was to emerge Nithyananda, the self-styled 33-year old godman, arrested by the state CID in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday.

When he did emerge, hands folded in a ‘namaste’, a rudraksh-bead necklace dangling from his wrist, and a cosmetic grin that for seven years was worn to charm hundreds, Nithyananda’s gaunt visage and his eyes could not conceal the fear and confusion.

By his right was his bespectacled US head of operations, Gopal Sheelum Reddy, alias Bhaktananda (described by a number of former devotees as ‘Rowdy Swami’), also arrested in CID’s stealth operation at Solan in Himachal Pradesh. Reddy is a green card holder and a resident of California.

As Nithyananda, dressed in a saffron robe under which he wore a saffron singlet, took a few steps out of Gate 7, chaos broke loose.

As Nithyananda, dressed in a saffron robe under which he wore a saffron singlet, took a few steps out of Gate 7, chaos broke loose.

A battery of journalists, photographers, visitors to the airport and the police jostled with each other as plainclothes cops tried to make way for the godman to walk past.

In the utter pandemonium, when Deccan Herald asked Nithyananda whether he regretted it all, the godman stared but did not respond. One US-based NRI devotee who had met Nithyananda at the godman’s hideout told Deccan Herald over phone “the swami was without remorse for what he had done”.

Along with Gopal Reddy, the godman was bundled into a waiting car which sped away toward Ramanagara where he was first taken to the district government hospital for a simple, customary physical examination before being produced in court. The Judicial Magistrate remanded him to police custody for four days. Nithyananda and Reddy were later driven to the CID headquarters in the City and lodged in a lock-up.

The Karnataka CID clarified that only Nithyananda and Reddy were arrested in Wednesday’s raid while three other devotees, who were detained on Thursday, were taken to the Bidadi ashram. The three, however, will be called by the CID for further examination.

Nithyananda’s bete noir Lenin Karuppan, alias Dharmananda, who exposed the godman’s sexcapades with a Tamil actress, will arrive here Friday evening.

Nithyananda, Reddy, the three devotees and the CID team flew here on Kingfisher flight 107 (from Mumbai) that touched down at BIA at 6:40 pm.

Their luggage, comprising several suitcases, three laptops, three video cameras, backpacks and a bundle of documents, seized in Wednesday’s raid, were moved out in three cart-loads.

Police sources said after being arrested at Shivshankargarh village under Arki police station, Himachal Pradesh, on Wednesday, the accused persons were moved to Shimla. On Thursday morning, they were taken by road to Chandigarh from where they took a flight to Mumbai via Delhi. In all, the godman, arrested on several criminal charges, and his associates, were in air for a good seven hours before they landed here.

The interrogation of Nithyananda and Reddy by the CID will begin on Friday. The police will also analyse the laptops and the five SIM cards seized from the duo’s possession to find out leads for their case.

Police sources said the laptops and SIM cards are likely to yield “valuable information”.
The police are aware of the several calls Reddy made on behalf of Nithyananda to people in the US, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The police suspect that threat emails were sent out to some influential NRI former devotees in the US. One of the three associates is suspected to have made calls to an Andhra Pradesh-based devotee in a bid to “blackmail” him into silence.

Swami Nityananda arrested in Solan

Apr 22, 2010, 01.08am IST
SHIMLA/BANGALORE: Controversial self-claimed godman Swami Nityananda, on the run since his sex romps were caught on tape and aired by TV channels, was finally arrested from a house in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday afternoon. Police recovered $7,000, Rs 3 lakh, three laptops, eight mobile phones, three video cameras from the house where Nityananda was staying since March 27.
The house belonged to Satinder Singh from Delhi, who, the police said, would be questioned soon. Nityananda was later driven down to Shimla and questioned there. Dressed in flowing robe but sans his trademark tilak, he looked calm. He would be produced in a Himachal court for transit remand and then taken to Bangalore on Thursday afternoon.

A joint team of Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh police tracked his cellphone calls for two days and surrounded the house in the isolated Shivshankargarh area in Solan. The police team from Bangalore, headed by two DSPs, had reached Solan on April 19. Cops took the help of a CID team from Shimla, before swooping down on
the house.
Assistant superintendent of police, Solan, Ramesh Pathania, said the swami was wanted by Kanataka police in two cases under Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 376 (punishment for rape), 377 (unnatural sex), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.
After the tapes of Nityananda with a Tamil actress were aired on TV on March 3, the godman's former driver Kuruppan Lenin filed a complaint with the Chennai police commissioner, while another case was registered at Coimbatore by Vishwanath for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. Bidadi police registered the cases based on the two complaints. The cases were handed to the CID, after which the CID sleuths started getting complaints from overseas through e-mail.
A court in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu had issued a non-bailable warrant against him on Monday with the direction to produce him before the court on May 20, police said. His four aides have been identified by cops as Gopal Salem Reddy, Mithya Bhakta Nanda, Arun Raj and Arpil Sangil. The swami would be interrogated before a transit custody is obtained in order to hand him over to Karnataka police for investigation, said Himachal DGP Daljit Manhas. In Bangalore, CID DG Dr D V Guruprasad said a CID team conducted a search on the ashram on Tuesday and seized important documents, including hard disks.
Nityananda's lawyers said they were ready for a legal battle. A legal team is will move court in Bangalore on Thursday. Nityananda has rejected sex scandal allegations against him.
He resigned in March as the head of 'Dhyanapeetham', which he had founded near Bidadi on the outskirts of Bangalore.

From plush environs to lock-up

Bangalore, April 21, DHNS:

Far from the sprawling acres at Bidadi, the gold-plated thrones, gold rudraksh-bead necklaces, soft-cushioned beds and the presence of female attendants, a 5 x 8 square feet lock-up awaits Nithyananda at the CID headquarters here.

The “sleaze godman,” who faces charges of rape, unnatural sex, cheating, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus, will be lodged in the lock-up which is being refurbished for him.

The toilet, with tiled floor, that he will share with four other arrested associates is being cleaned. The commode and wash basin are being tidied up and the bathroom fittings are being redone.

As soon as he is brought to Bangalore on Thursday, he will be produced at the Ramanagara court. If he is given police custody, Nithyananda will be driven straight to the CID headquarters and dumped into the lock-up. An adjoining second lock-up (also 5 x 8 square feet) is being cleaned up for lodging the godman’s four associates, one of them being Gopal Sheelum Reddy, alias Bhaktananda, the head of Nithyananda’s operations in the United States.

The lock-up has no television but is large enough to hold one person. It has a simple cot with a pillow.

Food, of course, will be provided by the CID. Next to this lock-up is the interrogation room where he will be grilled by a team of CID officers. The interrogation chamber has all modern equipment, including a one-way mirror from which officers will be able to monitor the proceedings inside. The chamber is also fitted with a CCTV camera.

Nityananda Swami, 4 aides arrested in Himachal Pradesh

Last Updated: Wednesday, April 21, 2010, 23:21

Solan/Bangalore: Over a month after he was reported absconding following his alleged involvement in a sex scandal, self-styled godman Nityananda Swami, along with four of his associates, was today arrested from the house of a Delhi-based businessman in Solan in Himachal Pradesh.

The arrests were made by a Karnataka Crime Investigation Department team and policemen from Himachal Pradesh in Mamlig village under Arki police station area in Solan district, Deputy Commissioner, Solan, Amar Singh Rathore, said.

32-year-old Nityananda and his associates, including his close aide, Nitya Bhaktananda alias Gopal Seelam Reddy, were being shifted to Shimla, 45 kms from Arki, for being produced before a court tomorrow for transit remand to take them to Bangalore, DIG in Himachal Pradesh CID, N Venugopal, said.

They were arrested after the authorities tracked a mobile phone having a Himachal Pradesh sim card to establish their location, Superintendent of Police, Solan, Prem Kumar Thakur, said. Police did not disclose the name of the Delhi-based businessman.

Others arrested were identified as Mitha Sanathan Nanda, Arpil Sangil and Arun Raj, Thakur said, adding that Rs three lakhs in cash, about 7000 US dollars, three video cameras and three laptops were found in the house.

Karnataka Corps of Detectives DGP D V Guruprasad told PTI in Bangalore that two deputy superintendents of police had reached Solan on April 17 following information that Nityananda could be living there. There were reports that he had attended the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar.

The controversial self-styled godman had gone into hiding after a purported video footage showing him in a compromising position with a Tamil actress was aired on local TV channels on March two.

Nityananda along with others is wanted in connection with two cases registered at Bidadi, about 35 kms from Bangalore.

Guruprasad said the CID yesterday had conducted searches in Nityananda's ashram and seized some 'important' documents and a computer hard disc.

Nityananda has rejected sex scandal allegations against him. He had resigned last month as the head of 'Dhyanapeetam', which he had founded near Bidadi on the outskirts of Bangalore city.

He had announced that he would lead a 'life of spiritual seclusion' for an indefinite period.

The Tamil Nadu police had registered various cases under the IPC against him including that of rape. The cases were later transferred to the Karnataka police.

The Ramanagaram police, under whose jurisdiction his ashram near Bangalore falls, have registered two cases against Nityananda.

The Karnataka High Court had last month rejected Nityananda's anticipatory bail application. A petition filed by him praying for quashing of cases filed against him will come up for hearing before the High Court on Friday.

Later, the self-styled godman and four of his associates were brought to the head office of CID at Shimla from Arki where they were briefly interrogated by a joint team of Himachal and Karnataka Police.

Nityananda said that he had come to the state from Haridwar and was staying at the house in Mamlig under Arki police station, according to Additional Director General of Police (CID) I D Bhandari.

The ADG alleged Nityananda was living in the house of a Delhi-based businessman which was taken on rent in the name of one Vikas Dogra.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (CID) N Venugopal said the godman and four of his associates were in CID custody and most likely would be produced before a Shimla court tomorrow for transit remand to take them to Bangalore.

When mediapersons sought reaction from the godman, he merely smiled and greeted them with folded hands without uttering anything.
